Spotlight: Melbourne

Since launching, we’ve seen Instagram spread from our headquarters in the Bay Area to every corner of the globe. In this series, Spotlight, we’ll highlight top users from countries and cities with thriving Instagram communities.

The city of Melbourne—Victoria’s capital and the second most populous city in Australia—was deemed the most livable city in the world two years in a row, causing a plethora of artists to move into the city’s limits. Due to the ever-changing skyline’s modern, cutting-edge designs and its diverse, historical architecture there is never a shortage of photographic inspiration.

Want to view Melbourne from an insider’s perspective? We put together a list of some amazing Instagrammers from in and around the city.

  • Kamil Sharaidin, Malaysian architect and photographer living in Melbourne— @kamilsharaidin
  • Farrah Allan, wedding photographer — @farrahallan
  • Stephanie Stamatis, stylist and designer with an affinity for rustic greenery — @stephanie_somebody
  • Cleo Coppinger, model and photographer documenting her day-to-day adventures — @cleocoppinger

To explore the city in depth, you can also browse the location pages for some of Melbourne’s more popular landmarks:

  • The Arts Center, known for its easily recognizable and iconic spire
  • Federation Square, a civic center and structure with unique and beautiful architecture
  • Eureka Skydeck 88, the highest public vantage point—285 meters (935 feet)—in the southern hemisphere.
  • Melbourne Cricket Ground, the tenth-largest stadium in the world, the largest in Australia, and the largest stadium for playing cricket.

One year ago today, the Tokyo Skytree (東京スカイツリー) officially opened to the public. Standing 634 meters (2,080 feet), the Skytree is the tallest tower and the second largest structure in the world. The Skytree took four years to build and in the last year alone over 6.3 million people visited the tower—many capturing the experience on Instagram.

I wish I was there..

The 100th Annual Chelsea Flower Show

For more photos from the 100th RHS Chelsea Flower Show, be sure to check out the #chelseaflowershow hashtag and keep an eye on the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and Royal Hospital Chelsea location pages.

This week, the United Kingdom’s Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) holds the 100th annual Chelsea Flower Show—the most important flower show in the UK, if not the world. The event takes place at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, where the show has been held for the past hundred years.

Over 550 exhibitors from around the world display their show gardens and choice florals for a chance at winning a coveted gold medal. The event draws crowds from across London, including a visit from the Royal Family on the show’s opening day.

This year, the Chelsea Flower Show also features a monumental orchid sculpture by British contemporary artist Marc Quinn. His work, The Rush of Nature, will be auctioned off during the festival to help the RHS meet its fundraising goal of £1 million to promote a passion for gardening and horticulture among youth.

Indonesian Instagrammers Meet at Mount Bromo, East Java

This weekend (April 6-7), we’re challenging people around the globe to host their very own photo walk or InstaMeet, just like this Indonesian crew. Organizing is easy: grab some Instagram friends, pick a location and add a hashtag to the photos that you share that’s unique to your InstaMeet! Learn more here.

Inspired by the @pilgramers, Indonesian Instagrammers Ernanda Putra (@ernandaputra) and Jagat Natha (@jagatnatha) hosted their own InstaMeet in Jakarta in January. They were amazed by the success. “18 people came from all around the country. We had so much fun that day and got lots of feedback and requests to do it again.” So Ernanda and Jagat, along with Dicky Irman Nassa (@anomalu) from Jakarta and Sigit Hartanto (@sigithartanto) and Arie Novwan (@konservatif) from Bandung, began planning their next InstaMeet at Mount Bromo, an active volcano in East Java.

The game plan was simple: the five organizers announced the InstaMeet on their Instagram accounts and invited anyone to participate, so long as they could arrange their own transportation to Mount Bromo and pay for lodging.

23 Instagrammers made the trip, many of whom met for the first time at the three-day event. They spent most of the first day on the road together, splitting three cars en route to Bromo. On the second day, the group summited the mountain at 3:00AM to see the sun rise, and later explored Bromo’s “green savana” and “whispering sands.” Each night, they returned to their shared lodging, a local villager’s house, and got to know one another better. “For me this small event was really special,” Ernanda says. “Instagram actually brings me exciting new experiences— meeting new people, exploring new places—and this was a truly unforgettable experience.”
